An ordinary man has an extraordinary visitation.
In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. And they were calling to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.” At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke. “Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.” Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.” Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!” (Isaiah 6:1-8 NIV)
Last Sunday, a pastor whose teaching I particularly like spoke of heroes and what heroes had in common.
All of them need to be open to serve, to utter those three words - Here I am.
We can all be heroes in His kingdom. We just need to follow a four step plan:
1) Meet with Him - Isaiah was scared, but he went down on his knees and met with God. He prayed with a fervent heart
2) Cleanse our soul - Isaiah knew he was a man of unclean spirit and that he lived among men with unclean spirits. So he asked God to cleanse him. A seraphim placed a burning coal in his mouth symbolising his cleansing.
3) Look for His call - God asked Isaiah "who will go for me"
4) Volunteer to do His will - And though scared, Isaiah volunteered to do His will. "Here I am, send me"
Now let's move to the world of fiction, all super heroes have a tag line - Batman, Superman or even Iron man. All of them have a purpose, the purpose to serve for the greater good. When the baddie strikes - "Here I am"
And in the real world, our fire fighters, our police personnel, our doctors all of them volunteer to serve. When disaster strikes - "Here I am"
In the bible too, there are several instances of ordinary men submitting to the will of God. We've seen that in Isaiah. And here are some more.
And God spoke to Israel in a vision at night and said, “Jacob! Jacob!” “Here I am,” he replied. (Genesis 46:2 NIV)
Then the Lord called Samuel. Samuel answered, “Here I am.” (1 Samuel 3:4 NIV)
Then I said, “Here I am, I have come— it is written about me in the scroll. (Psalm 40:7 NIV)
So what are you waiting for? The bible says,You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. (Jeremiah 29:13 NIV). Get that cape and rise to your power. Tell God - Here I am, send me!
